Default RE: Anybody have some new planks for inspiration?

Hey everyone,
I just thought that I would ask about any new/used/old/vintage planks (read guitars duh) that might be causing anyone to have/find some new licks/inspiration lately? I've always believed that any new instruments added to the stable always brings you all kinds of new stuff...

Best regards,
Dean/SOB

I agree with that theory, Dean. I know that I always get a jolt of inspiration when a new toy comes into the house. Lately though, I've been totally uninspired to play anything; must be the summer doldrums setting in, I guess.

I've been experiencing some inspiration from my relatively new Stratocaster. I have been a "Les Paul guy" for years but had given Fender Strats a try a few times over the years. When I was a kid I saved up and purchased a brand new mid 70's Strat...that instrument was just horrible (I was a kid, who knew?). I stopped playing while I started my family but decided to pick up a Mexican made Strat in the early 90's. That guitar was OK but uninspiring. I sold it and happily went my way with the Gibsons - eventually purchasing a 2001 R8 Historic. WOW! What an instrument! After a while, I realized I'd never really given the Stratocaster a fair try. I decided to buy one exactly like I wanted - American made with an all nitro finish (body and neck) and give it one more shot. Well, I'm happy to say this one does it for me (finally!). It's got great tone and feel (love the nitro neck!), a very resonant body with the Fender "Thin-Skin" nitro finish and a very traditional '62 appearance despite it being a hybrid "Fender Special Run" which, long-story-short, combines an American Deluxe neck with rolled edges and a 9.5" radius to a '62 body. It also has the new SCN noiseless pups and S1 switching which was a very pleasant surprise - they work as advertised! I primarily play the Blues and Blues/Rock. The Stratocaster obviously has a place in those genres!
I'll always love my Les Paul but I can now turn to my Strat for inspiration when needed...I'm already looking at a nice Tele purchase down the road a bit!

2005 Fender Stratocaster
Hey Russ,

As much as I love my Les Paul I also enjoy 335s as well as various cool sounding guitars like Gretsch, Fender and PRS (these work best for fusion only in my opinion cause they can be brighter in the mix). BTW, who thinks PRS guitars are better for fusion than anything else (musically speaking that is)?

Best regards,
Dean/SOB

Dean,
A 335 is also on my short list of "must haves" - they're just a bit pricey for me at the moment. Surprisingly, I have yet to bond with any PRS guitars. It's probably half mental but the tone is a bit to smooth for my tastes (which sounds like I should dig it for fusion tones!). The PRS guitars I have played always leave me wanting either a ruder or twangier tone - again, it's probably mental.
They sure are beautiful guitars though - almost too pretty. I really like the look of the new nitro finished satin PRS ...PRS class and 'old school' vibe combined! As far as the rest of the bunch - I'd like to pick up an old Gretsch someday. Maybe a 12 string Rickenbacker too. I also like the tone of the old Danelectro and Silvertones for blues. That recent Danelectro reissue (under 300 bucks) is tempting...probably full of inspirational vibe! I definitely agree with you about how new/different guitars (and amps!) can inspire or, in my case, shake me out of a technical and inspirational rut.

That Rickenbacker 12-string is one of my last BIG ones on my short list. After that, I won't need nuthin'

Are those old Rickenbacker 12 strings strung differently than most other 12 strings (with the gauges of each string pair reversed)? It supposedly gives the Ricks a distinctive tone - I remember reading that once somewhere (I think). I've never played one... the 6 strings were a bit tight and I'm a bit concerned about the 12 strings neck width not being a good fit for my chubby fingers! I hope you get to cross it off your short list soon, though I prefer to always keep a short list goin' -if you know what I mean!

You are correct; the octave string is first followed by the "normal" string. In my book, there's only one choice for an electric 12 and that's a Rick. All others pale in comparison.....that's why I own 2

Thanks for the info PeeWee...I'm glad my memory works at least in bits and pieces. My wife says I have selective hearing and learning 'cuz I can't remember names, dates (etc.) but I can remember something I read years ago about a guitar I've never played. She's right, my brain is chock full of guitar info/trivia like that...I hope my brain can keep all this "unimportant" stuff filed through the years to come!
