Hi,

Have you found that your sound is harsh or dull beyond the controls of the amplifier?

What speakers do you then run and what combinations do you like?

My current favorite combo is a Heritage H30 and a Blue in my Tophat Club Royale 2X12 (AC30 type circut).

Bjorn,

Absolutely correct! Spkrs are a HUGE factor in the shaping of an amp and its tone. I have had many experiences where an amp that should have really sounded great just wasn't shining until I found the proper spkr match-up.

Choices between ceramics and Alnicos, cones and thicknesses, amount of doping, power handling, etc, these all factor in.

The ability of a spkrs to focus and reproduce certain frequencies is what makes it the perfect match for a certain amp.

Case in point. I never cared much for the ToneTubby Hemp cones I heard. I only heard them in 2 Rock amps and thought they were lousy, too dark and muddy sounding. But when I was at Denis Cornell's place w/ Gary Winterflood, we were playing his Cornell Clapton Tweed amp and the thing was brilliant. I couldn't believe my eyes when I looked in the back and saw the ToneTubby! It was the perfect match up.

Different spkrs do better in certain cab configurations also, as well as wattage levels. For example, the 60s BW cabs I've had and played that had M25s were sweeter at louder volume levels. Same cabs with H30s performed more efficiently at lower levels. M25s seem to do better in closed back cabs IMO.

There are so many variables that experimentation w/ spkrs is always a good idea before deciding the fate of an amp.
