Alright, this is what I see this section will be good for:
explaining in more or less simple terms how things in an amp work.
help with fixing things - if I can't fix it I can fix it so noone else can fix it;)
In general I'd like this section to be a knowledge sharing place. The more knowledge we share the better for all of us. With this I would like to ask other amp wizards to also participate. That does in no way imply that anyone should divulge any knowledge considered proprietary. But pls share your experience.
So, what's troubling you is the nature of ?
Exactly!
So i have this noise coming from my amp, it gets louder when I face north, and gets fuzzy when I face south. My local guy told me to face east, what should I do :D
Or should we post the insides of a Dumble :) and have someone explain what all that goop is for? :D

Hi,
In the first place: what do you hear in the east and which direction do you like most?
Secondly: No you don't! while this is know as 'free form amp'. It means that first you build an amp and listen to it and then you hear odd things in the sound and add some circutry to remove the odd sound untill it sounds just right and then you add goop to secure the additional circuitry.
Ah well you could ask why not get it right the first time but then it would not be tuned to the customer.....Oh yea the thrill is gone and the truth is unbelivable
There are rumours that certain manufacturers take the inwards of japanese pedals and mold them into their amps and this is at the outmost amusement of said manufacturers and so they laugh too much to bother.
There are other rumours that certain colour of goop sound differently and perhaps better and thsi has proven to be the case in the ear of the listener ;)
I think one might discuss what myths do for musicians.
Is there not both magic, voodoo and jojo?
Listen to sound and discover the limitations and reduce them accordingly.

Hi,
Ah the stones, the popgroup.......
well I guess you know my name.......as what's puzzling you is the nature of my game
Have fun

I just picked up a Carr Rambler. The tremolo is output tube bias based like the 50's Gibsons. It makes a loud pulsing sound when the depth is set above 10 o'clock. I think the noise is inherent with the design, but is there any way to reduce it?

My 1 1/2 year old loves to play with my amp, particularly plugging and unplugging the cables into every jack he can find on it. Well, I noticed recently that not only has he managed to ruin 2 of my nicer cords by bending the tips, but he also popped off the small metal ring from the jack's opening. I found three of them and simply pushed them back on the input jacks, but I am missing two. My questions below:
Can I buy these "rings", and if so where?
Can my son be causing unseen damage to my amp doing this?
Is there anything or anyplace he could get shocked easily by sticking his little fingers?
...and I guess the best answer you could give me, where could I buy a cover for my Blues Deluxe?

Swoosh-swoosh noise pumping is more prominent in output tube bias modulation tremolo than in LDR tremolo. Imagine you have a post phase inverter master volume that you turn up and down- you'll get similar noise pumping sound.
However, if the noise pumping is accompanied by a popping or ticking sound than I would suspect something wrong with th tremolo oscillator circuit.
Hope this helps.

No popping. It's more of a thumping than a ticking. I think it's the design and there's nothing I can do about it. I tried popping some different tubes in the tremolo spot but that didn't help.
The tremolo sure does sound sweet though!

Sorry, what ring? If your kid managed to BREAK OFF the threaded part above the nut then I would replace the jacks. Otherwise it will be possible to push the plug too far into the jack. Could you post a picture of the jack and the "ring" ? I'm not really sure what we're talking about.
I really hope the amp was not plugged to the mains while your kid was fooling around with it. Have you read the safety instructions ? Where it says "keep away from children and animals"? I'm not paternising, I'm only paranoid about safety especially when little kids are involved.
Your kid can get hurt in several ways:
- stick his finger into the jack and get stuck, break the finger
- stick his finger between a knob and panel, cut finger
- get behind the amp. pull tube or power cord and get tangled in it
- get his little arm stuck inside speaker basket
etc.etc.
As for the cover: There's a thread over at TGP listing a whole bunch of amp cover makers.

I don't understand. Do you mean the washer? I don't know how he could pop that off without taking the nut off.

Ok, those silver rings on the inside rim of the jack...those are what my son was prying off with my cords. I found all buy one and they only required me to push them back in/on.

ok, they're extentions for too short jacks so plug doesn't go in too far. Haven't seen those a lot, they used to be threaded in the old times... Found two only? If the last one is not inside the amp cabinet, not stuck on a plug, not inside the dustbag in your vacuum cleaner and not to be found anywhere, well, it's small enough.... I'd be checking the kids poo. If you have even the slightest suspicion that he might have swallowed it you may want to get him x-rayed. Just to be on the safe side.

Thanks for the concern, luckily he isn't one to put things in his mouth unless it's food. I'll look in the amp tonight of the missing one.
